A case study of zeolitization process: “Tufo Rosso a Scorie Nere” (Vico volcano, Italy): inferences for a general model

Abstract: Abstract. This paper focuses on the authigenic mineralization processes acting on “Tufo Rosso a Scorie Nere” (TRS), i.e. one of the main pyroclastic units of the Vico stratovolcano (Latium, Italy). The pyroclastic deposits appear in general massive and made of “black vitreous vesiculated juvenile scoriae”, immersed in an ashy matrix lithified after zeolitization processes. The main minerals are chabazite and phillipsite, and the zeolitic content is locally variable, reaching 68 % wt. Zeolites grow replacing bo… Show more

“…Phillipsite-Ca and clinoptilolite-Ca are rarely observed. Compared to the present data, the zeolite mineralization of the olive unit is characterized by a higher Si/Al ratio, as evidenced by the presence of clinoptilolite Ca 3 (Si 30 Al 6 )O 72 •20H 2 O. Si/Al ratio differences could be related to the protoliths diversity [48][49][50]. A low Si/Al ratio in zeolites displays a highly alkaline environment [1,48,[50][51][52][53].…”

“…Zeolitite used in this study is the “Tufo Rosso a Scorie Nere” (TRS), ( 27 , 28 and references therein) the largest pyroclastic flow related to the ancient volcano of Vico, a deposit that extends on a surface of about 1300 km 2 This pyroclastic flow deposit is essentially massive and commonly made of black vitreous vesiculated juvenile elements immersed inside a yellow zeolitized ash matrix 27 , 28 . TRS rock was finely ground (particle size < 60 µm) and analysed by powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) on a Siemens D5000 diffractometer operating with Bragg–Brentano geometry; CuKα = 1.518 Å, 40 kV, 40 mA, 2°–45° 2θ scanning interval, step size 0.020° 2θ) (Fig.…”

“…In most of cases reported in technical literature, ammonia uptake by natural zeolite is referred to clinoptilolite-mordenite zeolitites. For this reason, we test here the efficacy for ammonia uptake of an italian chabazite-phillipsite zeolitite the so-called “Tufo Rosso a Scorie Nere” (TRS) 27 , 28 , coming from the Latial Province (Central Italy), used in the regeneration of sewage waters of the San Giustino channel, a tributary of the Pescara River (Abruzzo Region, Central Italy). Preliminary experiments based on continuous column process were performed in laboratory.…”

“…Columbu and Garau [ 10 ] have researched this field using mineralogical, petrographic, and chemical studies of samples of ignimbrite used in antiquity in the construction of the Roma Nora Theatre. Novembre et al [ 11 ] emphasize the importance of ignimbrite as a high-quality cementitious material. This quality is attributed to the presence of zeolitic secondary mineral phases, which infer a strong pozzolanic nature to ignimbrite and a high hydraulic reactivity to the cement–pozzolan interface within the mortar.…”
