A case of ovarian serous cystadenofibroma with scattered lesions in pelvic cavity, like malignant disseminations

Abstract: Ovarian serous cystadenofibroma is a relatively rare subtype of serous cystadenoma classified as ovarian benign epithelial tumor. We report a rare case of ovarian serous cystadenofibroma with scattered lesions in pelvic cavity, like malignant disseminations. The patient was 22 years old, gravida 0, para 0. In the laparoscopic surgery, numerous hard yellowish-white solid masses of various sizes were present in the bilateral ovaries. Grossly similar masses were scattered in the fimbria of the fallopian tubes, pe… Show more

“…Benign appearing serous tumors and low-grade serous carcinomas have been reported in the peritoneal cavity in patients with ovarian cystadenomas. [12][13][14][15] These disseminated tumors are typically thought to arise from foci of endosalpingosis. While that is a possibility in the present case, no endosalpingiosis was noted and, to the best of our knowledge, no reports of endosalpingiosis involving the liver have been published.…”

“…[11] However, the Ovarian serous cystadenofibroma is a rare benign ovarian tumor characterized by the presence of cystic structures lined by serous epithelial cells in a fibrotic stroma. [12] It is hard to distinguish this type of benign ovarian tumor from malignancy due to the similarity of imaging features of the two conditions on ultrasonography, CT, or MRI. One study found that some ovarian serous cystadenofibromas had pure cystic lesions, while the rest had cystic components with thick or irregular septa.…”
