A case of orbital extra-adrenal paraganglioma in a quarter horse

Abstract: Paragangliomas are tumors originating from paraganglia cells which represent a considerable constituent of the dispersed neuroendocrine system. Rarely these tumors are found within the orbital region. This report documents a case of primary extra-adrenal paraganglioma in a 15-year-old female quarter horse, diagnosed on the basis of clinical signs, gross anatomopathological, histopathological and immunohistochemical investigations. Clinical diagnostics led to full appreciation of the severe tumor invasiveness a… Show more

“…In contrast to medulloepitheliomas, retinoblastomas are mainly composed of sheets of undifferentiated neuroepithelial cells (7,20). The main histological characteristic of medulloepithelioma is the formation of the Flexner-Wintersteiner rosettes (7), therefore, immunohistochemistry could be performed to confirm the suspicion of medulloepithelioma and exclude the differential diagnoses (23,29) as the neuroendocrine carcinomas and paragangliomas (26).…”

“…In animals, PGLs are very rare neuroendocrine tumors and the cases described in the literature have been found in dogs [ 7 , 23 , 24 ] and horses [ 6 , 9 , 10 , 25 , 26 , 27 ] but only occasionally in cats or other animals. In fact, to the authors’ knowledge, only one case of paraganglioma of the cauda equina region of a cat has been described [ 3 ], but this neoplasm in the orbit of a cat has never been described.…”

“…The paraganglion system is composed of a large network distributed symmetrically in the para-axial body regions within different tissues [ 5 ]. It is either grouped in cell aggregates, or in single individual cells, representing an important constituent of the neuroendocrine system [ 6 ], and it can be classified into four groups: the branchiomeric paraganglia (arteries and cranial nerves of head and cervical region), intravagal paraganglia—along the vagus nerve, the aortic-sympathetic paraganglia, visceral autonomic paraganglia (interatrial septum, liver hilum, duodenum, urinary bladder) [ 7 ].…”

“…Primary intraocular tumors are a rare event in horses, with medulloepitheliomas (i.e., tumors of primitive neuroepithelium) and uveal melanomas being the most commonly reported neoplasms [ 4 ], and a single case of an orbital paraganglioma documented [ 22 ]. In the present case, the neoplasm was poorly differentiated, but with the aid of IHC, a poorly pigmented or amelanotic melanoma could be ruled out.…”
