A case of non‐specific interstitial pneumonia effectively treated with a combination of prednisolone and colchicine, in which granulation tissue was extensive

Abstract: A 56-year-old woman was admitted for interstitial pneumonia, and subsequently diagnosed with idiopathic non-specific interstitial pneumonia with a bronchiolitis obliterans organizing pneumonia pattern, on the basis of clinical and surgical lung biopsy findings. Histological findings revealed diffuse thickness of alveolar walls accompanied by lymphocyte infiltration and fibrosis in the lobules. In addition to those findings, granulation tissue was extensive. Although initial symptom and CT improvement occurred … Show more

“…8 Colchicine interferes with several inflammatory pathways including adhesion and recruitment of neutrophils, superoxide production and inflammasome activation by acting on the cytokine network through the inhibition of IL-1beta. 5 The benefits of colchicine were described in different viralmediated inflammatory conditions such as EBV/CMV-induced myocarditis, 9 pericarditis triggered by influenza B, 10 interstitial pneumonia of unknown origin 11 and interstitial pneumonia caused by autoimmune process. 12 The side effect profile of colchicine is widely known, with gastrointestinal symptoms occurring in up to 17% of patients, while severe organ manifestations being rare.…”

“…Colchicine combined with prednisone has been used to treat idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis. 16 In conclusion, we present a rare case of FB associated with RA that was initially presumed to be asthma. In our case, colchicine improved the symptoms and signs of FB.…”

“…5 Second, colchicine could be effective in undiagnosed disease patients complaining of skin rashes, polyarthritis, and edema, especially those with some features similar to autoinflammatory or autoimmune diseases. Colchicine is reported to be effective in many diseases, including recurrent polychondritis, 14 pyoderma gangrenosum, 15 adult-onset Still's disease, 16 interstitial pneumonia, 17 pericarditis, gout, and familial Mediterranean fever. Possible diagnoses of these diseases were ruled out in our case.…”
