A calibration strategy for LA-ICP-MS using isotope dilution for solid reference materials

Abstract: An isotope dilution method for the quantitative analysis of trace elements in biological samples and for the characterization of reference materials for the analysis of biological samples by laser ablation-inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-ID-MS) has been tested. Polymeric thin layers with 5-10 mm thickness containing the ID-spike and the correction standard were produced by knife application onto polyester substrates. For the ID experiments 204 Pb enriched lead was used, and bismuth served … Show more

“…159 Thieleke and Vogt quantified Pb in biological samples and reference materials using isotopically enriched spiked polymers. 160 A sandwich-like structure had three 5−10 μm layers containing a penetration marker (Li), enriched isotope ( 204 Pb), and a correction marker (Bi), and the sample (Pb) was mounted onto a polyester substrate (Figure 13).…”

“…The accuracy of this approach was verified while analysing several elements (Cr, Fe, Cu, Zn, Sr, Cd and Pb) in selected CRMs [74]. Another sound example was provided by Thieleke & Vogt [75]. In their work, 204 Pb-enriched lead was used for performing ID-MS calibration, while bismuth served as IS.…”

“…In order to assure high accuracy of the results, a standard sample containing lead as well as a lead-containing polymer CRM (BAM H010) has been used. The mass fractions for lead, calculated after single and double ID experiments in the test samples, showed a deviation of less than 1% (relative to the certified values) [75]. …”
