A Bis(hexadentate) Biphenyl‐Based N12 Ligand and Its FeII Complexes

Abstract: The novel biphenyl‐based ligand N,N′,N″,N″′‐tetrakis(2,2′‐bipyridin‐6‐ylmethyl)‐4,4′‐dimethyl‐1,1′‐biphenyl‐2,2′,6,6′‐tetramine (6) with 12 nitrogen donor atoms has been synthesized. Ligand 6 is able to host two metal ions in an octahedral coordination sphere. This was shown by the synthesis of the dinuclear iron(II) complex 5 ([Fe2(6)]4+). Furthermore, the corresponding mononuclear iron(II) complex 4 ([Fe(6)]2+), where one coordination site is free, was obtained. Both FeII complexes show spin‐crossover behavi… Show more

“…96 In 2013, Petzold and co-workers reported a dinuclear Fe 2 L complex of a bis-hexadentate, biphenyl-linked, L25 (Chart 6), in which the two Fe(II) centres are linked by this single ligand. 97 Remarkably L25 provides all twelve N-donors to the two octahedral Fe(II) centres in [Fe 2 (L25)](BPh 4 ) 4 . The structure determination shows the complex to be fully LS at 153 K (Fig.…”

“…2,3,[7][8][9] Among these, the most extensively studied SCO materials are complexes of iron(II) (d 6 ), 4,10,11 and cobalt(II) (d 7 ), 12,13 which have attracted the interest of many researchers as potential functional materials in fields such as molecular electronics, memory storage, thermochromic indicators and sensors. 14,15 However such applications require that the spin transition occurs abruptly at ambient temperature (ideally room temperature) and with wide thermal hysteresis (for memory effect).…”
