Abstract: Research Summary Do firms respond to tougher competition by searching for completely new technological solutions (exploration), or do they work to defend their position by improving current technologies (exploitation)? Considering the different times to fruition for exploration versus exploitation, in the presence of heightened competition, we argue that firms might not be able to wait for the benefits of technological exploration to materialize. “…Viewed from a different perspective, our findings also complement earlier research on corporate search in the field of strategy more broadly. Notably, we extend the list of contingencies—such as individual career concerns (Tandon & Toh, 2022), individual cognitive flexibility (Kiss et al, 2020), and corporate competitive pressure (Morandi Stagni, Fosfuri, & Santaló, 2021)—known to affect search distance by authoritative appraisal. “…A new technological class referred to a technical class that a firm had not used in patents filed within the previous five years. The five-year window is appropriate for estimating innovation and is widely used [ 64 , 65 , 67 , 68 ]. Therefore, a patent that utilized a new technological class was categorized as a technical exploration outcome.…”

“…h, l T and e T denote firm characteristics effects, time characteristics effects and the error term, respectively. Note that the robust standard errors for the first-and second-stage models are clustered by firm "to allow for autocorrelation of the error term within firms and across years" (Morandi Stagni et al, 2021Stagni et al, , p. 1526.…”
