A biodegradable and near-infrared light-activatable photothermal nanoconvertor for bacterial inactivation

Abstract: A new nano-antibacterial strategy based on a biodegradable charge-transfer nanocomplex (CTN) was developed, in which the CTN acted as a high-efficiency near-infrared light-activatable photothermal nanoconvertor.

“…What is more, the photothermal activity of WO 3 under the dual-light co-irradiation remained stable over at least three photothermal cycles, revealing the strong and excellent stability of the synergetic effect between the orthogonal light wavelengths. According to eqn (S4)-(S7) (ESI †), 40 the photothermal efficiency (Z) was calculated to be 55.26%, which is comparable or better than that of the most reported inorganic photothermal materials. WO 3 is a semiconductor material, and light excitation may induce its internal electron transition and generate strong redox energy.…”

“…Recently, photothermal therapy (PTT) with near infrared (NIR) light caused hyperthermia has been widely utilized as a potent candidate for combating bacterial infections because of its high efficiency and lack of development of bacterial resistance. [3][4][5][6][7][8] However, during the PTT treatment process, the very high temperature (455 1C) can induce irreversible damage to normal human cells and tissues nearby, causing serious side effects. 9 To overcome this problem, low-temperature PTT (LT-PTT, r45 1C) has been considered as an expected modality to protect healthy tissues against high temperature injury.…”
