A bilberry drink with fermented oatmeal decreases postprandial insulin demand in young healthy adults

Abstract: Backgroundin traditional medicine, blueberries have been used to facilitate blood glucose regulation in type 2 diabetes. Recent studies in diabetic mice have indicated facilitated glycaemic regulation following dietary supplementation with extracts from European blueberries, also called bilberries, (Vaccinium myrtillus). The purpose of the present study was to investigate the impact of fermented oat meal drinks containing bilberries or rosehip (Rosa canina) on glycaemic and insulinaemic responses.Methodsglycae… Show more

“…This plant contains anthocyanosides, the bioflavonoid complex with anti‐oxidant, anti‐cancer and anti‐inflammatory actions . In vitro studies on cyanidin‐3‐glucoside (C3G) as a type of anthocyanin found in whortleberry reported that C3G reduced glucose levels and improved insulin sensitivity in mice with T2DM . In vivo studies have reported that Caucasian whortleberry significantly decreases liver enzyme plasma levels and glycemic control in T2DM patients and has an anti‐inflammatory action .…”

“…In einer weiteren Untersuchung bewirkte der Konsum eines Heidelbeersaftes einen Rückgang des postprandialen Insulinbedarfs. Eine weitere Pilotstudie ergab Hinweise, dass der Verzehr von Heidelbeeren eventuell sogar vor dem Auftreten von Dickdarmkrebs schüt-zen könnte [20,21].…”

“…39,40 Baobab fruit and green tea extract were baked into white bread in the study by Coe et al 41 aiming to enhance its nutritional quality. There is evidence that the effect of polyphenol-rich fruits is more evident on insulin than glucose postprandial response.…”
