A Big Data Analysis Approach for Rail Failure Risk Assessment

Abstract: Railway infrastructure monitoring is a vital task to ensure rail transportation safety. A rail failure could result in not only a considerable impact on train delays and maintenance costs, but also on safety of passengers. In this article, the aim is to assess the risk of a rail failure by analyzing a type of rail surface defect called squats that are detected automatically among the huge number of records from video cameras. We propose an image processing approach for automatic detection of squats, especially… Show more

“…This model could predict the rail break approximately near to the actual breaks with the limited data, by considering the temperatures at the time of rail break. In the recent years, some studies on the application of deep neural networks for risk assessment of service failure using failure images have been also considered (Jamshidi et al 2017).…”

“…Noting that railway infrastructure requires constant monitoring in order to make sure it is safe, there is no doubt that failure of the railway creates huge risk and problems. In this special issue, Jamshidi et al (20) discuss a method that helps to conduct risk assessment for rail failures by analyzing squats (a kind of rail surface defects). The authors (1) Extending the model to study stability and risk for budget airlines.…”
