A 20-year study of persistence of lower urinary tract symptoms and urinary incontinence in young women treated in childhood

Abstract: Objective: To determine whether urinary incontinence (UI) and lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) persist over years, patients treated for UI and LUTS in childhood were reevaluated in adulthood. “…8 Moreover, women with lower urinary tract symptoms have a higher prevalence of childhood BBD than their healthy counterparts. 18,19 Further longitudinal studies are warranted to explore the natural history of BBD and identify subgroups of higher risk patients who may have BBD that persists into adulthood. Since our followup was short (3 months), it was impossible to determine which group would Treatment Group Figure 2.…”

“…6 We hope the results of our parallel group, randomized, controlled trial prompt other investigators to explore the effectiveness of these techniques against regional infiltration in a prospective systematic fashion.Lastly we wish to reemphasize the primary finding in our report, that surgeon provided local infiltration works quite well! We also directed the injection superiorly, as close to the costal margin as possible, to reach a high thoracic nerve level.…”

“…5-7 A higher number of urinary tract symptoms are reported in young women after treatment for childhood LUTD compared to healthy age-related controls. 8,9 Other authors found childhood LUTD to be an independent risk factor for urinary tract symptoms in adulthood. 6 Childhood LUTD is associated with lowered self-image, lower quality of life(QOL) and a negative impact on psychosocial wellbeing at the time of occurence.…”

“…Data about the number and types of urinary tract symptoms in adolescents and young adults treated for functional childhood LUTD is scarce since children are lost to follow-up by their paediatricians/ paediatric urologists upon reaching adulthood. Previous studies mainly include either middle-aged adults, in whom comorbidities might act as a confounder, or young females 5,8 . Less is known about the presence of urinary tract symptoms and QOL in, for example, young males or adolescents previously treated for LUTD.…”
