A 18-yr long (1993–2011) snow and meteorological dataset from a mid-altitude mountain site (Col de Porte, France, 1325 m alt.) for driving and evaluating snowpack models

Abstract: A quality-controlled snow and meteorological dataset spanning the period 1 August 1993-31 July 2011 is presented, originating from the experimental station Col de Porte (1325 m altitude, Chartreuse range, France). Emphasis is placed on meteorological data relevant to the observation and modelling of the seasonal snowpack. In-situ driv-5 ing data, at the hourly resolution, consist in measurements of air temperature, relative humidity, wind speed, incoming short-wave and long-wave radiation, precipitation rate p… Show more

“…It is a 50 × 50 m 2 meadow surrounded by forest. Exhaustive information about the site and the available data‐series can be found in Morin et al (). Here, 18 years (from 1 August 1993 to 31 July 2011) of snow and meteorological data are considered.…”

“…In the Crocus model, hourly measurements of air temperature and specific humidity at 2 m above snow surface, wind speed at 10 m above ground, snowfall and rainfall rates and incoming short‐wave and long‐wave radiation have been used. Refer to Morin et al () for an exhaustive description of the data.…”

“…It consists of hourly records of the driving data for the land surface model ISBA within SURFEX. Full details regarding the dataset and its availability are given in Morin et al (2012a). The model run was initialized with no snow on the ground on 1 August 1993, and a single run was performed until 31 July 2011.…”

“…The remaining 74 returns either were conducted in watersheds that did not span the rain-to-snow transition, or the data associated with their research were neither published nor easily available for public use. It is possible that additional datasets exist, but were not discovered using the search terms that we applied (e.g., data from a site Col de Porte, France [Morin et al, 2012]), who describe a dataset, but did not publish it. Although data presented by Morin 15 et al [2012], Wayand et al [2015], and WSL Institute for Snow and Avalanche Research SLF [2015] are useful, our dataset is unique because it includes basin-wide measurements and stream discharge, which permit hydrologic modeling and a mass balance approach.…”
