The detailed snowpack scheme Crocus and its implementation in SURFEX v7.2

Abstract: Abstract. Detailed studies of snow cover processes require models that offer a fine description of the snow cover properties. The detailed snowpack model Crocus is such a scheme, and has been run operationally for avalanche forecasting over the French mountains for 20 yr. It is also used for climate or hydrological studies. To extend its potential applications, Crocus has been recently integrated within the framework of the externalized surface module SURFEX. SURFEX computes the exchanges of energy and mass be… Show more

“…We used Terra MOD11 and Aqua MYD11 products in version-5. These products were evaluated by Wan (2014) with the radiancebased method: using atmospheric temperature and water profiles and surface emissivity, the radiance-based method calculates MODIS LST values from brightness temperatures in band 31 through radiative transfer simulations. By applying this method on 42 sites, Wan (2014) found MODIS T s errors within ±2 • C for all the sites but six bare soil sites (not including South Pole).…”

By applying this method on 42 sites, Wan (2014) found MODIS T s errors within ±2 • C for all the sites but six bare soil sites (not including South Pole). For the South Pole site, MODIS LST error is only −0.5 • C. The accuracy of MODIS LST values depends primarily on the quality of the detection of clouds (Hall et al, 2008).…”

“…To avoid confusion between surface hoar and sublimation crystals, we will avoid the term of "frost" in this paper. To better characterize the possibility of forming sublimation crystals on the Antarctic plateau, we used the Crocus snow model (Vionnet et al, 2012) and the formalism of Style and Worster (2009). We report here these field and modeling studies and attempt to derive implications for the energy and mass balance of the Antarctic plateau.…”
