A 12-Year Retrospective Study of Canine Testicular Tumors

Abstract: ABSTRACT. To provide up-to-date information on the incidence and risk factors of canine testicular tumors, 476 pathological reports of male canine tumors from two institutes of veterinary medicine in Taiwan Cryptorchidism was significantly associated with development of MGCSCTs, SCTs, and SEMs, but not ICTs (p<0.01). The detection rate of testicular tumors in the dog younger than 10-years-old was significantly associated with cryptorchidism (p<0.01). Except for mixed breed dogs, the Maltese breed had high det… Show more

“…Complications caused by undescended testicles include a higher incidence of sertoliomas and seminomas. Statistically there is also a higher incidence of testicular tumors in animals less than 10 years-old when cryptorchidism is present (LIAO et al, 2009), which is corroborated by the findings in this dog. The development of tumors in abdominal or inguinal testicles might be related to the higher temperatures in those areas (ROMAGNOLI; SCHLAFER, 2006).…”

“…Testicular neoplasms are common in elderly dogs, less common in horses, and rare in other species (FOSTER, 2013). The most common testicular neoplasms in dogs are Leydig cell tumors, seminomas, and Sertoli cell tumors (LIAO et al, 2009). Metastases are rare, although sertoliomas can occasionally spread to inguinal lymph nodes.…”

“…Incidence of cryptorchidism is relatively high in dogs and it is well documented that cryptorchidism and advanced age are major risk factors associated with testicular tumours in dogs [12,16,19]. In addition to the present case, where the tumour was diagnosed at nine months of age (the mass was initially palpated per rectum at six months of age), tumours in other newborn and young cattle have been reported [2,6,17].…”

“…A pesar de no existir suficientes datos sobre la ocurrencia de la alteración en el país, en la práctica clínica es usual encontrarla. También se conoce que los testículos retenidos tienen mayor riesgo de desarrollar neoplasias y presentar torsión (especialmente en los testículos neoplásicos) (3,4). Debido a las implicaciones clínicas y la heredabilidad de la condición, se recomienda orquiectomía.…”
