Abstract: Using a newly described analysis of natural killing activity employing an "individual effector/target cell ratio" according to the number of effector cells in blood, we recently determined that patients with spontaneous lymphoma regression had elevated natural killing activity prior to regression. To clarify the clinical significance of natural killing activity in patients with advanced lymphoma, a prospective study was performed at a single institution in 43 untreated patients. Survival was analyzed to detect… Show more

“…47 Furthermore, higher absolute NK cell counts and "natural" cytotoxicity at diagnosis have both shown to positively correlate with response to therapy, either in the pre-rituximab era, 42,[48][49] and more recently in immunochemotherapy-treated patients. 50 Our results, although obtained in a limited number of patients, confirm that defective basal "natural" killing activity associates with treatment failure, thus stressing the role of NK cell cytotoxic capability in the success of rituximab-based therapy.…”

“…The color fundus photographs and SD-OCT images of this report provide documentation that PVRL lesions can regress without treatment, leaving an area of RPE atrophy. The exact mechanism or clinical significance of these lesion changes is hypothesized to be due to tumor control by the host immune system, primarily by CD8+ T cells [3,4] as well as NK cells [5]. In this case, the patient's vitreous biopsy showed a predominant population of non-neoplastic lymphocytes, providing support of immune surveillance, while the sub-RPE biopsy of the newly formed lesion did not.…”

“…This phenomenon has been described in a very limited number of cases of intraocular lymphoma [ 11 – 13 ]. The exact mechanism for this phenomenon is unknown but it is hypothesised to be due to tumour control by the host immune system, primarily by the CD8+ T cell and Natural Killer cells [ 14 ]. In two reports regression diagnosis was based on histopathological absence of lymphomatous cells; [ 11 , 13 ] this observation may reflect an immune response but it is recognised that pathological diagnosis can be challenging due to paucity of cells and cellular degeneration and this may account for the authors’ findings.…”
