Cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma (cSCC) and actinic keratosis (AK) occur most often on the face. Ultraviolet light is apparently their most common cause. As AK is considered to be a precursor of cSCC, their distribution on the face should be similar. However, cSCC often occurs on the temple or mandibular area, whereas AK arises on the central forehead, cheek or nose. We retrospectively evaluated differences in affected site distribution for cSCC (n = 54) and AK (n = 95). We found AK to occur preferentially on the central facial area (63/95, 66%), which is the most sun-exposed area, and cSCC to occur preferentially on peripheral areas such as the temple and mandibular area (24/54, 44%). Those distributions were significantly different (P = 0.011, Fisher's exact test). This result suggests that cSCC occurs preferentially in the peripheral area compared with the central facial area, which further implies that either other factors are needed to make AK progress to cSCC in peripheral areas, or that peripheral cSCC can occur without preceding AK. This is the first report to focus on geographic assessment of cSCC and AK in detail. Further studies are needed to elucidate the mechanism of our finding.

Eyelid squamous cell carcinoma is a major type of rare eyelid cancer, together with basal cell carcinoma and sebaceous gland carcinoma. It is a painless disease that progresses slowly and is often detected by the appearance of nodules or plaques. Risk factors include exposure to ultraviolet light, fair skin, radiation and human papillomavirus infection. The standard treatment is surgical removal, and in cases of orbital invasion, orbital content removal is required. If sentinel node biopsy reveals a high risk of lymph node metastasis, adjuvant radiotherapy may be considered. Local chemotherapy, such as imiquimod and 5-fluorouracil, may be used for eyelid squamous cell carcinoma in situ. When surgery or radiotherapy is not recommended for distant metastases or locally advanced disease, drug therapy is often according to head and neck squamous cell carcinoma in Japan. The treatment often requires a multidisciplinary team to ensure the preservation of function and cosmetic appearance.

If you are looking for a broad overview of diseases of the hair and scalp look no further! This text is concise and consists mainly of definitions and brief descriptions of hair and scalp diseases. As you would expect in an atlas, treatment is not the emphasis. The strength of this atlas revolves around 240 high quality pictures, sometimes hard to find in general dermatology textbooks because they represent rare diseases. The pictures are mainly clinical, but one can find a good number of light microscopy and electron microscopy illustrations of hair shaft. There are only a few scalp biopsy illustrations. The book is divided into nine chapters and gives a glimpse of the physiology of hair growth, hair shaft abnormalities, alopecia, excess of hair and abnormalities of the scalp including inflammatory, infectious and tumoral diseases. A 2-hour reading for a dermatologist in training, or a dermatopathologist seeking clinical exposure, will pay back by providing excellent clinical descriptions of a wide variety of hair and scalp diseases.
