Abstract: Validity and reliability of a Singaporean English EQ-5D self-report questionnaire (EQ-5D) were evaluated among consecutive outpatients with rheumatic diseases attending a tertiary referral hospital in Singapore (a multi-ethnic, urban Asian country). Subjects were interviewed twice within a 2-week period using a standardized questionnaire containing the EQ-5D, Short Form 36 Health Survey (SF-36) and assessing demographic and psychosocial characteristics. To assess validity of the EQ-5D, 13 hypotheses relating r… Show more

“…We also found evidence to support test-retest reliability of the EQ-5D self-classifier, with Cohen's κ being moderate to perfect (0.48-1.0). The κ values in our study were in general better than those reported in previous studies of subjects after stroke using EQ-5D (Cohen's κ: 0.63-0.80, 3-week, n=234)16 and in those with rheumatic diseases (Cohen's κ: 0.29-0.61, 1-week, n=52) 3. The significant and reasonably high intraclass correlation coefficient obtained in the EQ-VAS reliability study (0.78) demonstrates that the EQ-VAS is a feasible measure of self-reported health.…”

“…Applicable to a wide range of health conditions and treatments, it provides a simple descriptive profile and a single index value for health status. The EQ-5D is now available in most major languages with cultural adaptations 13. There are no published reports on the acceptability and psychometric properties of the EQ-5D iin the Arabic language, which is the first language for more than 300 million people.…”

“…There is also a substantial volume of evidence supporting various aspects of its reliability [22,27,31,32,34]. Empirical investigations have also demonstrated that the EQ-5D has sound sensitivity to change [35-39].…”

“…The Singaporean English EQ-5D differs from the original English version only in the visual analog scale (VAS) instructions [20]. The Singaporean Chinese EQ-5D had earlier been adapted for use in Singapore following the EuroQol Group's cultural adaptation guidelines [21].…”
