This study investigated the influences of couple goal congruence and venture-related communication on new venture creation. It was grounded on the Sustainable Family Business Theory using a longitudinal copreneurial sample. Structural equation modeling supported study hypotheses. First, copreneurs with couple goal congruence were more likely to have quality venture-related communication. Second, copreneurs who had quality venture-related communication were likely to have more viable new ventures. Third, there was a sequential relationship among couple goal congruence, venture-related communication quality, and new venture viability. Findings have implications for transference of copreneurial couple-based trust to create quality venture-related communication for tackling liability of newness in new venture creation.

“…The dyadic interaction between predecessors and successors is important because if managed properly it builds greater trust, better understanding and opportunities for improved knowledge transfer among the actors (Cabrera-Suárez et al, 2001;De Massis, Chua & Chrisman, 2008;Handler, 1990,Harvey & Evans, 1995Sharma et al, 2001, Ward, 1987, and it is linked directly to improved successor post-succession performance (Goldberg, 1996) and positive organizational outcomes (Handler, 1990;Le Breton-Miller et al, 2004;Stavrou & Swiercz, 1998;Venter et al, 2005). Successions are usually portrayed as events where predecessors quickly and quietly fade away from the picture once the transfer of managerial authority is complete. However, for majority of the family firms this is not the case. Family firm predecessors can continue to be involved with the family business even after their retirement in myriad of ways through on-going and overlapping business and kinship relations. Based on interviews with predecessors and successors from nineteen family businesses in Turkey, this article presents that it is the successors’ expectation how their predecessors should act after the succession that determines whether post-succession predecessor involvement has a positive or negative influence on the family business.

Economy and Divorces: Their Impact Over Time on the Self-Employment Rates in Spain

The paper used time-series data and examined the effect of economic and social variables on the male and female self-employment rates in Spain. We also employed cointegration analysis (with and without) structural breaks. We thus find strong evidence that long run relationships exist among the variables. More precisely, we find that the unemployment rates and the ratio of self-employment to employees' earnings have a positive effect on self-employment, whereas, economic development and divorce rates have a negative effect. Importantly, we find that the economic variables have equal or stronger long run impact on females than males, with both groups reacting to changes in family circumstances. Finally, we show that the short run family circumstances are better predictors of selfemployment choices rather than economic factors, with self-employment being a means of adjustment to new personal circumstances and economic needs.
