Sol-gel coatings of different composition in the ZrO 2 -SiO 2 system have been prepared, starting from several precursors (alkoxides and alkylalkoxides). Common soda lime silicate glass slides were used as substrates for coating deposition. The Vickers microhardness,H V , of the coated glass substrates have slightly higher values than that of uncoated glass. Young modulus, E, values for coated glass substrates are higher than that of uncoated glass. To compare the mechanical properties of the samples, the ratio H V /K IC (where K IC is the toughness) has been calculated and the concept of fragility discussed. The fragility of coated samples increases as the ZrO 2 content diminishes and the SiO 2 increases. Both scanning and transmission electron microscopy observations were performed to characterise the textural and microstructural properties of the coatings.

Concerns over reducing CO 2 emissions associated with the burning of fossil fuels in combination with an increase in worldwide energy demands is leading to increased development of renewable energies such as wind. The installation of offshore wind power structures (OWS) is one of the most promising approaches for the production of renewable energy. However, corrosion and fatigue damage in marine and offshore environments are major causes of primary steel strength degradation in OWS. Corrosion can reduce the thickness of structural components which may lead towards fatigue crack initiation and buckling. These failure mechanisms affect tower service life and may result in catastrophic structural failure. Additionally, environmental pollution stemming from corrosion's by-products is possible. As a result, large financial investments are made yearly for both the prevention and recovery of these drawbacks. The corrosion rate of an OWS is dependent on different characteristics of attack which are influenced by access to oxygen and humidity. Structural degradation can occur due to chemical attack, abrasive action of waves, and microorganism attacks. Inspired by technological and scientific advances in recent years, the purpose of this paper is to discuss the current protective coating system technologies used to protect OWS as well as future perspectives.

Abstract:Organic-inorganic hybrid films were prepared using tetraethylorthosilicate (TEOS) oligomer and special acrylated polyester (SAP) via a UV-curing process. TEOS oligomers were prepared in the presence of water and ethanol using hydrochloric acid as the catalyst and characterized using 1 H NMR, 29 Si NMR and MALDI-TOF mass spectra. Special acrylated polyester was synthesized by 1,4-cyclohexane dimethanol, neopentyl glycol, 1,4-butanediol, maleic anhydride, adipic acid, and acrylic acid. Hybrid films were cured by UV light and the thermal properties, dynamic mechanical properties, and tensile properties of the hybrid films were evaluated as the function of TEOS oligomer content. The morphology of the hybrid films was examined using atomic force microscopy (AFM). The microscopy and dynamic mechanical data indicated that the hybrid films were heterogeneous materials with various inorganic particle sizes dispersed within the organic matrix. The results indicated that after incorporating the TEOS oligomer, the strength and thermal stability of the hybrid films were enhanced.
