Abstract-Peripheral neuropathy is a common complaint of diabetes. Peripheral neural damage in turn will cause balance impairments in diabetic patients. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of balance exercises on sway indices in diabetic patients with neuropathy. In this clinical trial study, 10 diabetic patients with peripheral neuropathy were recruited through simple nonprobability sampling along with 10 nondisabled aged-matched subjects. Participants in both groups were examined for balance abilities with the Biodex Balance System before intervention. The experimental group was tested again after intervention. Intervention consisted of progressive Biodex stability and rocker and wobble-board training for 10 sessions. All tests were done in eyes open and closed conditions with bilateral standing. After intervention, the experimental group was re-examined in the same way. Student and paired t-tests were used for data analysis. The overall stability index and anterior-posterior stability index were significantly decreased after treatment in the experimental group during different conditions. Balance indices in the experimental group were significantly higher than the control group before treatment. There was no significant difference in indices between the two groups after treatment. The results show that balance training can improve stability indices in diabetic patients with neuropathy.

RESUMENLa inestabilidad de la postura y alteración del balance corporal son signos comúnmente observados en sujetos con afecciones que comprometen el sistema músculo-esquelético, visual, vestibular y propioceptivo, siendo la estabilometría la principal herramienta de valoración clínica. Sin embargo, no se ha podido establecer un gold standard o patrones cuantitativos que permitan clasificar sujetos sanos y patológicos basados en el grado de alteración del equilibrio. Objetivo: El objetivo principal de este estudio fue realizar un análisis estabilométrico preliminar con 38 sujetos sanos (19 mujeres y 19 hombres), con el fin de identificar un patrón de desplazamiento característico de la postura. Metodología: Este estudio se basó en la aplicación del test de Romberg. Se realizaron tres mediciones en cada paciente con ojos abiertos (OA) y ojos cerrados (OC), ubicados sobre una plataforma de fuerza en posición vertical. Resultado: se identificó un patrón característico de desplazamiento en los ejes medio-lateral X y antero-posterior Y, así como una estabilidad notable sobre el eje vertical Z, alrededor del centro de presión. Limitaciones:Sin embargo, debido al tamaño de la muestra, no se encontraron resultados concluyentes sobre las diferencias de índice de masa corporal, sexo o edad en el grupo de estudio. Originalidad: A pesar de ello, se encontraron paráme-tros prometedores para la evaluación de la estabilometría en personas jóvenes sanas, fortalenciendo con ellos las herramientas objetivas de valoración clínica. Conclusión: Esta investigación permitió identificar características de movimiento comunes para pacientes normales, que pueden ser consideradas como un patrón objetivo para el seguimiento y evaluación de tratamientos en pacientes con trastornos del equilibrio de origen patológico.

Comparison of scores obtained in videogame with biomechanical variables in stroke

Virtual reality (VR) promotes intensive training of a single task, enabling the motor learning, thereby affecting the recovery of postural control (PC) in individuals with stroke. Video game with balance platform are used as a form of intervention and, at the end of the game, a score is provided, but there is no evidence that it can be used as a quantitative parameter of PC. Objective: To determine whether there is a correlation between the score obtained by a video game and stabilometric variables. Methods: Nine individuals with stroke participated in an experimental protocol using the game Penguin Slide as intervention. The score was collected in the first and last sessions. The 2.0 AMTI force platform was used, with an acquisition frequency of 200Hz for evaluating before and after intervention. The volunteers were positioned with open eyes (OE) and closed eyes (CE) in the upright position for 1 minute, with one foot on each platform. Using the Matlab software, the variables of center of pressure (COP) were obtained: total COP area (ACOPt), COP area on the mediolateral (ACOPx) and anteroposterior (ACOPy) axis, average speed of COP (VCOP). The non-parametric paired Wilcoxon test (p < 0.05) was used to compare the initial and final results of Penguin Slide game score and the pre and post intervention data obtained by the force platform in the OE and CE conditions. The analysis were done with the software R.
