Abstract: Enrichment of lead in respirable suspended particulate matter (RSPM) and exposure of human blood to particulate lead in traffic environment were investigated. Samples of RSPM, non-respirable suspended particulate matter (NRSPM) and total suspended particulate matter (TSPM) were collected in 10 sampling sites located on National Highway No. 6, Drug-Bhilai section of Chhattisgarh State of India. Forty blood samples, out of which 20 of highway traffic personnel with chronic exposure and other 20 of general popula… Show more

“…Lead is also used in the production of lead acid batteries, solder, alloys, cable sheathing, pigments, rust inhibitors, ammunition, glazes and plastic stabilizers. Tetraethyl and tetramethyl lead are important because of their extensive use as antiknock compounds in petrol [25,27,28,32] . Lead toxicity leads to anaemia both by impairment of haemobiosynthesis and acceleration of red blood cell destruction.…”

“…High contribution to Pb would suggest that this source is re-suspended road dust (Al-Chalabi and Hawker 1997; Wang et al 2005). As stated before, Pb based antiknock agents have been phased out of the country since 2000 (Sharma and Pervez 2003). So, the contribution to Pb by this source can only be attributed to previously deposited Pb two decades ago.…”

“…The concentration of various industries along the middle part of the river course and their activities should have increased the higher concentration of lead in the river. Moreover, the atmospheric depositions resulting from the automobile pollution and the urban run-off due to precipitation may also lead to the increase in the concentration of Pb in the aquifers (Varrica et al 2003;Rajnikant and Pervez 2003). The value of Cr ranges from 0.102 to 0.947 mg/l, with an average value of 0.512 mg/l during premonsoon and 0.07 to 0.56 mg/l with an average value of 0.25 mg/l during postmonsoon.…”
