Abstract: ABSTRACT.-Changes of vegetal cover in the Aragonese western Pyrenees are shown throughout the last 50 years. The evolution is characterized by a generalised revegetation process with an advance of shrubs and forests. The medium and low slopes show the most intense revegetation as a consequence of the agricultural aban-Palabras clave: Cambios de cubierta vegetal, cambios de uso del suelo, sucesión secundaria, NDVI, montaña, Pirineo, España.

“…Another consequence is the reduction of subalpine grasslands (Lasanta and Vicente-Serrano, 2007), which has been related to the decline of grazing and the ascent of the upper tree line due to global warming (Sanjuán et al, 2013). The reduction of meadows and increase in scrubland in mountain areas is a widespread process in the Pyrenees (Camarero et al, 2015).…”

“…Throughout the 20th century, especially from 1940 to 1970, 70% of agricultural land was abandoned, and only the valley floors and some level areas in the mid-slope were still cultivated (Lasanta, 1988). Plant recolonisation in abandoned fields has enabled scrubland and forest expansion, and some areas were reforested with pines (Lasanta & Vicente-Serrano, 2007).…”

“…There are different aerial photographs (1977, 1981, 1990, ect. ) with higher resolution than the ones from 1957, but the natural revegetation process after land abandonment (75% of cultivated land was abandoned before 1950) complicate differentiate land patterns (Lasanta & Vicente-Serrano, 2007). Maps were made in five valleys in the Central Spanish Pyrenees ( Figure 1), including representative valleys of the Western (Aragón, Subordán and Estarrún rivers), Central (Alto Gállego) and Eastern (Ara and Bellós rivers) sectors.…”
