Recent years have witnessed great interest in mass-participation running events (1), and organisations such as parkrun and fitness programmes like Couch to 5 K, have been instrumental in enabling participation for inexperienced runners. Concomitant with this has been a number of fictional works which centre on the 5 K run. I contend that exploring fictional texts can offer a fresh take on how movements such as parkrun and Couch to 5 K have entered the popular imagination. The four texts explored are Wake's Saturday Morning Park Run (2020), Park's A Run in the Park (2019), Boleyn's Coming Home to Cariad Cove (2022), and James's I Follow You (2020). The analysis is arranged thematically around the categories of health promotion, individual transformation, and community building. I argue that these texts frequently operate as health promotion tools and can help familiarise would-be runners with how parkrun and Couch to 5 K work.

This paper explores Woolf's self into her character: Mrs. Ramsay and vice versa. The narrative of 'To the Lighthouse' offers a detailed description of her characters' inner selves and their outlook on life based on their interior designs. Woolf has drawn her characters based on incidents chiselled from her personal life. Her personal life suffered incessantly from jolts of fear, psychosis, neurosis, and attempts of suicide on various occasions. To compensate for the injuries and trauma of the past, Woolf is at her best in drawing the character of Mrs. Ramsay, which is full of love, life, and harmony, contrary to her own life, which was full of trouble and mental sickness. Woolf could not manage her personal and conjugal life smoothly, but Mrs. Ramsay, on the contrary, successfully kept her family connected till her death. Our main argument is Aristotle’s stance on Art that artists, in reaction to the realities of the physical world, create an imaginative world of perfection. According to the novel's psychological nature, Freud’s theory of personality has been adopted in exploring and correlating the character of Mrs. Ramsay (the brainchild of Woolf) with Woolf’s personal life.

Clay has a long history in the global south and has been extensively studied by ‘Western’ social scientists particularly anthropologists and archeologists in relation to histories of earlier civilisations and cultural practices. Clay in relation to contemporary ‘science’ has received less attention in social science despite the emergence of the sub-discipline of ‘clay science’ and its increasing focus on clay to transform wide ranging aspects of social life. In this paper we work towards an exploration of clay in science. We begin with the question of ‘what is clay?’ from the perspective of a multidisciplinary group of scientists, whilst being alert to culturally located and past knowledges of clay that shape current scientific knowledges and practices. Drawing on interviews with six clay scientists we explore the ontological and epistemological process for scientists in ‘reading’ clay to reveal how clay is ‘classified’, ‘worked upon’ and ‘partnered’. Our findings suggest that clay comes into being for scientists by being read as an informational and temporal medium and agentic matter with transformative promise to remedy specific threats to human and environmental health.
