The temperature dependence of the heat capacity of highly pure hafnium (zirconium content of 0.14% by mass) in the liquid state is measured from the melting point to 5000 K. A sample in the form of a wedge made up by two thin strips of hafnium foil is heated by an electric current pulse. The temperature is measured by a high-speed pyrometer. The radiation from the space formed by foil strips is directed to the pyrometer via fiber-optical light guide. The specific heat capacity of liquid hafnium at atmospheric pressure from the melting point (2504 K) to the boiling point (4875 K) exhibits an increasing pattern similar to that of the previously investigated heat capacity of liquid zirconium.

The available experimental data for the density, thermal conductivity, and viscosity of liquid titanium, zirconium, hafnium, vanadium, niobium, tantalum, chromium, molybdenum, and tungsten have been critically examined with the intention of establishing reference correlations. All experimental data have been categorized into primary and secondary data according to the quality of measurement, the technique employed, and the presentation of the data, as specified by a series of criteria. In the case of the density, new reference correlations are proposed for liquid titanium, zirconium, hafnium, vanadium, niobium, tantalum, chromium, molybdenum, and tungsten, characterized by an expanded uncertainty (95 %) of 2.0 %, 2.1 %, 1.9 %, 2.2 %, 2.4 %, 2.6 %, 3.2 %, 2.1 %, and 4.1 %, respectively. The thermal conductivity reference correlations for the aforementioned liquid metals, except liquid chromium, are characterized by an expanded uncertainty (95 %) of 14.3 %, 8.4 %, 6.1 %, 11.4 %, 7.6 %, 4.0 %, 4.6 %, and 5.1 %, respectively. Finally, in the case of the viscosity, a review of the available literature shows very large deviations between data from authors for liquid titanium and zirconium, as well as a lack of measurements for the remaining melts. Hence, it is not justified to propose any kind of correlation for those cases.

Understanding controversies in the α-ω and ω-β phase transformations of zirconium from nonhydrostatic thermodynamics

Significant debate has been noted in the α-ω and ω-β phase transformations of zirconium. The initial pressure of the α-to-ω transformation at room temperature has been reported to vary from 0.25 to 7.0 GPa, while the hydrostatic transformation is believed to occur at approximately 2.2 GPa. Shear stress is commonly considered as a key factor leading to the discrepancy. However, the principal mechanisms previously proposed concluded that the phase transformation pressure would be decreased in the presence of shear stress. The experimental results of the α-ω transformation in zirconium are contrary to this conclusion. In the ω-β phase diagram of zirconium, the dT/dP along the phase boundary near the α-ω-β triple-point was reported to be either positive or negative, but no theoretical explanation, especially a quantitative one, has been proposed. This article aimed to quantitatively investigate and explain the controversies reported in the α-ω and ω-β phase transformations of zirconium by applying a new nonhydrostatic thermodynamic formalism for solid medium, which has recently been proposed and is capable of quantitatively estimating the impact of shear stress on phase transformations in solids.
