8.4: Distinguished Paper: Novel Color Electrophoretic E‐Paper Using Independently Movable Colored Particles

Abstract: A novel color electrophoretic E-Paper using independently movable colored particles with different threshold fields was proposed for the first time. An a-Si TFT driven two primary colors prototype with red and cyan particles was successfully demonstrated. A full color feasibility was also proved using three primary colored particles (yellow, magenta and cyan), which showed a gamut as wide as that of newsprint.

“…It is common to find this kind of technology in small sizes, although there are approaches with A5 size [47]. The majority are monochrome but there are also color options such as e-ink [48] or electrochromic (EC) technologies [49]. Liquavista, the recent acquisition of Amazon, also allows colors to be incorporated into the display.…”

“…In SID Display Week 2012, Fuji Xerox [1] first demonstrated a four color EPD by utilizing attractions between electrophoretic particles and special polymer layer coated on the electrodes. Since this technology uses neutral buoyant white particles to show the white state, it is a challenge to achieve good whiteness (>35% reflectance) and very thin display thickness (<50µm) at the same time.…”

“…E-Paper is a direct view electronic display that is either bi-stable or nearly bi-stable with the benefit of extremely low power consumption. Generally, there are several scenarios to implement the bi-stability (or nearly bi-stability), including electrophoretic [1]- [7], electrofluidic [8], [9], bi-stable liquid crystal display (LCD) [10], [11], electrowetting [12], [13] and other emerging approaches [14]. Despite jeopardized by the great success of emissive displays and their accompanying PC devices, e-Paper still has potential to leverage its strongest advantages which emissive counterparts are hard to achieve, such as superior energy saving, fine contrast under sunlight, continuous roll-to-roll manufacturing, flexible format, or even paper-like reading comfort.…”

“…System transfer matrix is composed of featuring spectral channels determining the significantly spectral components in color system. ored particles (IMCP) type from Fuji-Xerox [7], respectively. Electrophoresis is the motion of particles dispersed in solution or medium under the influence of an applied electric field in either vertical or horizontal direction.…”
