This article canvasses the two leading trajectories in the historiography of Canadian families: the demographic and the social and state regulatory. It also critically assesses the dominant historiographical view of the liberal order and the family which sees the latter largely as a sphere of economic relations. I also advance new theoretical departures and advocate the use of previously untapped sources such as familial correspondence, personal diaries, and legal records which will allow historians to explore the cultural directions of family life. These, I argue, will enable historians to recover alternate views of the relationship of public and private beyond conventional definitions of separate spheres which hitherto have relied too heavily on the gendered division of labour.

Résumé Nombreux sont les moralistes du tournant du xxe siècle qui critiquent la présence de pensionnaires payant pour être logés et nourris au sein des ménages privés. Ce serait le signe de la désagrégation des réseaux familiaux d’entraide. Cet article compare les caractéristiques des pensionnaires à celles des personnes apparentées qui se joignent aux ménages de la ville de Québec au moment des recensements canadiens de 1891 et 1901. La comparaison cherche à mettre de l’avant les réseaux de solidarité ayant pu se déployer par le partage de la résidence. Elle a aussi pour objectif de vérifier le supposé délaissement de l’hébergement des parents au profit des pensionnaires. Cette démarche permet de revoir quelques problèmes posés par l’utilisation des recensements pour capter ces populations flottantes.
