65.2: Invited Paper: Technologies for High Quality TV Image on PDPs

Abstract: For the improvement of TV image quality on plasma displays (PDPs), one of the most important technologies is video signal processing. The video signal processing shows its highest performance, when both the device characteristics and the signal processing are optimized to each other. Several techniques, i.e. noise reduction, signal format conversion, edge enhancement and gradation are developed and optimized for PDP with consideration of its device characteristics. The developed video signal processing shows h… Show more

“…In the linear-subfield driving scheme, a light-emission pattern within a TV field is linear, and hence a dynamic false contours do not occur [2,3]. In addition, arbitrary gamma characteristics can be obtained by varying the number of sustain pulses in the subfields.…”

“…In particulars, the maximum peak luminance was above 1500 cd/m 2 , the dark room contrast ratio was above 10,000:1, and the power consumption was between 250 and 300 W in the case of the 42 in. XGA module [1,2]. Costs have rapidly decreased due to the influence on the development of the process technology such as the multiarray process and the simple and compact circuit design.…”

“…Costs have rapidly decreased due to the influence on the development of the process technology such as the multiarray process and the simple and compact circuit design. A new image processing technology, which improves the expression of a low gray-scale level, dynamic false contour noise and image sticking, the low cost circuit design and the fabrication of panel have been applied for a driving PDP [1]. These factors lead the popularization of PDP-TVs.…”

“…In the contiguous-subfield addressing scheme, a light-emission pattern within a TV field is continuous, and hence a dynamic false contours do not occur [1,2]. Also arbitrary gamma characteristics can be obtained by varying the number of sustain pulses in the subfields.…”
