Phytochemical investigation of the bark of Cenostigma macrophyllum (Leguminosae-Caesapinioideae) resulted in the isolation and identification of valoneic acid dilactone, ellagic acid, lupeol, alkyl ferulate, four free sterols (cholesterol, campesterol, stigmasterol and sitosterol), a mixture of sitosteryl ester derivatives of fatty acids, sitosterol-3-O-β-D-glucopyranoside, stigmasterol-3-O-β-D-glucopyranoside and saturated and unsaturated fatty acids. The structures of the isolated compounds were identified by 1 H and 13 C NMR spectral analysis and comparison with literature data. The mixtures of 3-β-hydroxysterols and fatty acids were analysed by GC/MS.

A new tetramer oligostilbenoid possessing tetrahydrofuran ring, malaysianol C (1), was isolated from the acetone extract of the stem bark of Dryobalanops lanceolata, together with four known oligostilbenoids nepalensinol E (2), ϵ-viniferin (3), laevifonol (4), and ampelopsin F (5). The structures of isolated compounds were elucidated on the basis of spectral evidence. The antibacterial activity of the isolated compounds was evaluated using resazurin microtitre-plate assay, whereas the cytotoxic activity was tested using MTT assay. The plausible biogenetic routes of the isolated compounds are also discussed.

“…From literature reports, compound 1 which was first isolated from H. exalata [7] has been successfully isolated for the first time from the genus Shorea in this study, whereas (-)-laevifonol which commonly had been isolated from Shorea species that is S. laeviforia [8], S. pinanga [13], S. balangeran [14], S. parvifolia [15], S. macroptera [16] and S. selanica [17] also found in H. nutans [18]. (-)-Hopeanolin (1) was isolated from the acetone extract of the twigs of Shorea acuminata (Dipterocarpaceae), together with four resveratrol oligomers namely (-)-laevifonol, (-)--viniferin, (-)-vaticanol B and (-)-hopeaphenol. The structures of these compounds were established based on spectroscopic evidence, including UV, IR, NMR and mass spectra. Compound 1 showed the potent ability to protect -carotene bleaching by linoleic acid and also to scavenge DPPH radicals with IC 50 s 0.18 and 6.58 mM respectively. The presence of compound 1 and the other four resveratrol oligomers in this species have great chemotaxonomic significance on the relationship between Shorea and other genera of Dipterocarpaceae especially Hopea.
