In this paper, integration of 5G New Radio (5G NR) with a Visible Light Communication (VLC) downlink architecture is proposed. This scheme combines two complementary wireless technologies: upcoming 5G NR and VLC to offer indoor enhanced wireless hybrid access able to provide each User Equipment (UE) with very high data rate and positioning support. The data transmission of the 5G NR frame over VLC has been implemented. This represents a novel approach to transmitting 5G NR over VLC by hardware experimentation based on Universal Software Radio Peripheral (USRP). The experiment results show that the proposed scheme with Quadrature Phase Shift Keying (QPSK) mapping achieves a data rate of 14.4 M bits/s and an Error Vector Magnitude (EVM) of 4.78% for a 55 cm free space transmission span.

An interacting multiple model based on unscented Kalman filter (IMM-UKF) is widely applied to positioning and tracking targets in various tracking scenarios. At the same time, visible light positioning (VLP) is developing rapidly due to the low cost and accuracy. Therefore, indoor positioning and tracking based on VLP combined with the IMM-UKF has attracted considerable interest. However, existing algorithms work on the assumption that the light-emitting diodes used for tracking are all point light sources, which ignores the geometry of these transmitters and results in low tracking accuracy. To overcome this problem, this paper proposes an innovative tracking algorithm based on VLP. This algorithm considers the shapes of the lights in combination with existing tracking algorithms, such as IMM-UKF. Simulation results show that in a standard Gaussian noise environment, the larger the transmitter is, the more meaningful the proposed algorithm is. To feature a Light-Emitting Diode (LED) illumination infrastructure as a received signal strength (RSS)-based Visible Light Positioning (VLP) system's beacons, each LED's driver currently needs to be retrofitted. As a consequence of the intensity modulation (IM) retrofit, the LEDs' average radiant flux decreases. To remain adherent to the required illuminance levels, additional LED sources are required, which significantly raises the roll-out cost. The goal of unmodulated VLP (uVLP) is to refrain from modulating the LEDs by exploiting an inherent characteristic of the LEDs' light signals, namely the characteristic frequency (CF). This paper shows the aptitude of using the spectral magnitude at the CF to infer accurate positioning in photodiode (PD)-based RSS uVLP. Compared to regular VLP, uVLP displays a limited increase in median and 90 th percentile root-mean-square error of 3.52 cm (8.72 cm vs. 5.20 cm) and 7.54 cm (16.96 cm vs. 9.42 cm) respectively, during trilateration in a 4 m by 4 m lab setup. This shows uVLP's potential as an indoor localisation system.
