5D hyperspectral imaging: fast and accurate measurement of surface shape and spectral characteristics using structured light

Abstract: Measuring the shape (coordinates x, y, z ) and spectral characteristics (wavelength-dependent reflectance R (λi)) of macroscopic objects as a function of time (t) is of great interest in areas such as medical imaging, precision agriculture, or optical sorting. Here, we present an approach that allows to determine all these quantities with high resolution and accuracy, enabling measurement in five dimensions. We call this approach 5D hyperspectral imaging. We describe the design and implementation of a 5D senso… Show more

“…Area scanning systems can realize higher efficiency but the resolution is limited because of a relatively larger imaging area. Up‐to‐date reports show the trend of newly designed systems working in area‐scanning and single‐shot modes . When point scanning mode was proposed, the imaging points were not continuous in the plane.…”

“…The most convenient, classical way of obtaining such a spectrum is to modify a measuring device (microscope). It is mostly done using single scanning interferometers 2 , matrices of them 3 , matrices of color filter arrays 4 , or other adjustable media 5 , 6 . Such technical arrangements can be further successfully coupled with machine learning methods as well 7 .…”

“…Currently, multispectral cameras, 17 especially miniaturized multispectral snapshot cameras, [18][19][20] offer possibilities for real-time spectral imaging. They can realize simultaneous image data acquisition at multiple spectral bands.…”
