46‐2: Ultra‐Slim Direct‐Lit LCD Backlight Using Glass Light‐Guide Plate

Abstract: We report on the design and performance of a direct‐lit LCD backlight prototype which is only 5 mm thick and capable of full array 2D local dimming. Equipped with a 15.6” LC display panel, the prototype reaches peak brightness of 2000 nits. The measured contrast numbers meet VESA DisplayHDR 600 specification.

“…Because the light generated from thousands of mini-LED chips need to be distributed in-plane to produce a uniform illumination of backlight, optical structure of mini-LED backlight needs to be developed specifically for a limited vertical space. Several design concepts were disclosed previously [8,9] that achieve thinner form factor by reducing OD using a light guide plate (LGP) with an engineered pattern of reflective, diffusive and/or light extracting features on one or both surfaces, which was termed a patterned glass diffuser (PGD).…”

“…This design, although promising, is presently limited by the unavailability of inplane all-side emitting LEDs. We also reported a thin backlight that relies on bonding LEDs to a glass light guide plate [10].…”
