41.1: Development of RGBw LCD with Edge Lit 2D Local Dimming System for Automotive Applications

Abstract: We have developed 10-inch RGBW LCD with edge-lit 2D local dimming backlight system for automotive applications. This prototype system has power consumption reduction performance of 41.5% compared to a conventional RGB display without local dimming backlight. The performance and evaluation results are described in this paper. Author KeywordsAutomotive display, RGBW, Local Dimming, LCD, Backlight, Edge-lit, CIE2000 BackgroundThe backlights for automotive displays require high power consumption to obtain high lum… Show more

“…Contrast can be enhanced through the use of lenticular lenses on the front surface of the light guide plate (LGP) that confine the light from the LEDs in one dimension. Limited 2D local dimming has been demonstrated with edge-lit backlights but they cannot achieve the performance of thicker direct-lit BLUs [3], [4]. Direct lit BLUs are thicker due to the larger distance required to achieve the desired luminance uniformity.…”
