14‐1: Patterned Holey Glass LGP Based Ultra‐Thin 2D Local Dimming Backlight

Abstract: We report on an ultra-thin 2D local dimming backlight, as thin as an edge-lit backlight, yet as capable of 2D local dimming as a direct-lit backlight. It includes a patterned holey glass light guide plate (LGP) and a patterned reflector. Light from LEDs, located in holes, is edge-coupled into the LGP. “…We have previously reported on a backlight design as thin as an edge-lit backlight, yet capable of 2D local dimming as a direct-lit backlight, based on the use of a glass LGP with holes [9]. This design, although promising, is presently limited by the unavailability of in-plane all-side emitting LEDs.…”

“…We have previously reported on a thin backlight design where side-emitting LED sources are inserted into holes in the glass light guide plate (LGP) [3]. Essentially, the design preserves the thin form factor of the edge-lit backlight while enabling 2D dimming capability.…”
