4-Mercaptophenylboronic Acid SAMs on Gold:  Comparison with SAMs Derived from Thiophenol, 4-Mercaptophenol, and 4-Mercaptobenzoic Acid

Abstract: We report the formation and characterization of self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) derived from the adsorption of 4-mercaptophenylboronic acid (MPBA) on gold. For comparison, SAMs derived from the adsorption of thiophenol (TP), 4-mercaptophenol (MP), and 4-mercaptobenzoic acid (MBA) were also examined. The structure and properties of the SAMs were evaluated by ellipsometry, contact-angle goniometry, polarization-modulation infrared reflection-absorption spectroscopy (PM-IRRAS), and X-ray photoelectron spectrosco… Show more

“…The FTIR spectrum reveals CH modes at approximately 3000 and 1090 cm À1 , weak aromatic modes at 1609 cm À1 , and a clear B-O bending mode at 1363 cm À1 . [24] The spectrum also reveals a broad, weak O-H stretch at 3500 cm À1 , presumably arising from some inadvertent hydrolysis.…”

“…Hence, XPS and ESCA are the standard techniques used in surface analysis. For instance, XPS can not only characterize the elemental composition of SAMs, but also the highly-ordered structures in the SAMs which can be assumed from the XPS spectra [28,29]. Although these analyses have high sensitivity and resolution, samples that can be evaluated by XPS and ESCA are limited to the solid substrate because these analyses should be performed under vacuum.…”

“…[29] Different tail groups influence the stability by interacting with each other (e.g., dipole-dipole interactions or hydrogen bonding) and can also influence the degree of p-stacking. [30] For example, carboxylic acids can form intra-SAM hydrogen bonds, in which carboxylic groups in a meta position relative to the thiol group lead to a much higher extent of intramonolayer hydrogen bonding compared with the para position. [31] In addition, a substituent on the aromatic ring influences the electron density in the p-system and also the pK a of the mercaptobenzoic acids used in this study.…”
