“…The hemolytic assay was performed according to ref. 33. Briefly, 1000 mL of 10% (v/v) red blood cells (RBC) suspension containing 50 mL of 18-b glycyrrhetinic acid (18-b GTA) and derivatives at 100 mM concentration, respectively, were incubated under agitation at room temperature.…”

“…Although malaria is life-threatening, early diagnosis and appropriate treatment lead to it having an excellent prognosis [ 25 ]. Global data show that around 229 million people are affected by malaria, while about 409,000 succumb to it annually; hence, efforts are needed to prevent and control it [ 26 ]. Children under the age of 5 years and pregnant women are at a higher risk of being attacked by malaria and have a greater likelihood of developing complications [ 27 ].…”

“…In vivo antiplasmodial activity using Swiss albino mice infected with P. yoelli nigeriensis showed that a combination of ART and 4CE had chemo-suppression of 91.4% compared with 55% and 47% for ART (9.5 mg/kg) and 4CE (88 mg/kg), respectively ( Table 1 ). The results depicted below showed dose-dependency ( Table 1 ) [ 26 ].…”

“…Plants have been reported in combination therapy to possess either anti-plasmodial activity or synergy with antimalarial drugs, leading to attenuation of cerebral malaria pathogenesis. Recently, previous studies have demonstrated that a combination of 4-chloro eugenol, a semisynthetic of phytomolecules eugenol, and artesunate showed higher parasitemia suppression and prolonged mean survival time in P. berghei infected mice [ 17 ]. Oleanane triterpenoids given as adjunctive therapy in combination with artesunate significantly improved survival in ECM through reactive oxygen species scavenging and blood–brain barrier integrity improvement over artesunate alone [ 18 ].…”
