3T MR-guided in-bore transperineal prostate biopsy: A comparison of robotic and manual needle-guidance templates

Abstract: Purpose To demonstrate the utility of a robotic needle-guidance template device as compared to a manual template for in-bore 3T transperineal MR-guided prostate biopsy. Materials and Methods This two-arm mixed retrospective-prospective study included 99 cases of targeted transperineal prostate biopsies. The biopsy needles were aimed at suspicious foci noted on multiparametric 3T MRI using manual template (historical control) as compared with a robotic template. The following data was obtained: the accuracy o… Show more

“…Figure 2 Third dataset comprised nine MR prostate images obtained from publicly available database of The Brigham and Women's Hospital [48]. This dataset has been extensively used for research on medical procedures [49,50]. Out of these images, one was randomly selected as the reference image and the rest eight were labeled as subject images.…”

“…Both transrectal and transperineal approaches have been reported using this technique. [12][13][14][15] Prebiopsy MP-MR imaging is performed to identify target lesions. Patients are placed in the prone, supine, or decubitus position.…”

“…14 Recently, they reported the performance of robotically assisted needle guide placement using transperineal MR-GB and compared that method with the manual placement through the template guide. 15 The robotic device used in this study applied a motorized template to guide the needle with a control resolution of 0.001 mm. The investigators used 3DSlicer (this is the name of open source software http://www.slicer.org/) software for motion control of the robotic device and to optimize the needle placement.…”

“…In particular, systems for breast [75] and prostate interventions [76] that allow precise puncture on the basis of MRI images acquired during the intervention are widely used. After suitable registration of the target unit, the needle trajectory is calculated directly from a graphically marked MRI position in some systems [77].…”
