Abstract: Holothurians, or sea cucumbers, are a common group of echinoderms occurring in most benthic marine habitats in temperate and tropical oceans. Sea cucumbers, already known as bioactive compounds producers, are increasingly seen as a new source of food worldwide. Actions to foster a sustainable development of the resource they represent are increasingly encouraged. Fission is a way of asexual reproduction reported in these organisms. This natural ability to split their body into two parts is generally shown by v… Show more

“…If threatened, sea cucumbers can expel their entire gut and enteric nervous system, which are then regenerated after a few weeks, making these animals an excellent model to study intestine and nervous system regeneration [ 38 , 115 , 123 , 124 ]. In addition, while the majority reproduce sexually, some holothurian species are capable of asexual reproduction through fission [ 45 , 151 ].…”

“…Mediterranean sea cucumbers, including H.polii, are exported in dried and frozen form to Far East countries at prices of approximately 19 to 48 USD per kg (TURKSTAT, 2019) and became an important source of income for fishermen in the region. Due to the increasing economic importance of sea cucumbers, fishing arrangements, restocking and aquaculture efforts are required to ensure the sustainability of natural stocks (Toscano et al, 2018). Researches on the breeding biology of H. polii could have several applications (Rakaj et al, 2019).…”
