3D sketching for aesthetic design using fully free-form deformation features

Abstract: is an open access repository that collects the work of Arts et Métiers ParisTech researchers and makes it freely available over the web where possible. AbstractThis paper addresses the designers' activity and in particular the way designers express an object shape in 2D sketches through character lines and how these lines form a basis for sketching shapes in 3D. The tools currently available in commercial CAS/CAD systems to manipulate the digital models are still not sufficiently suited to support design. In … Show more

“…Free-form CAD surfaces are not necessarily associated with a closed-form mathematical definition and created through artistic/ sculpturing [4,36,73] or reverse engineering measurements [75] of random point clouds. This open framework also allow for morphing [11,18] and direct manipulation of surfaces through a limited number of intuitive parameters.…”

“…In this kind of software, 3D sketches are produced by manipulating a basic primitive shape into complex ones representing concepts of design (Pernot, Falcidieno, Giannini, & Leon, 2008;Cheutet et al, 2005). Manipulation is provided by different means.…”

“…Finally, to achieve a more complete intent-driven design framework that better supports designer in the product shape manipulation, all these new modelling tools should be integrated in a unique feature-based modelling system, starting from the prototype developed in [3] and defining a completely new user interface naturally adhering the stylists way of working.…”
