3D Printing and Implementation of Digital Twins: Current Trends and Limitations

Abstract: Fabricating objects with desired mechanical properties by utilizing 3D printing methods can be expensive and time-consuming, especially when based only on a trial-and-error test modus operandi. Digital twins (DT) can be proposed as a solution to understand, analyze and improve the fabricated item, service system or production line. However, the development of relevant DTs is still hampered by a number of factors, such as a lack of full understanding of the concept of DTs, their context and method of developmen… Show more

“…They analyze how DTs can be used to solve problems, such as how to feed a growing population, how to avoid food loss and waste and how to improve the existing inefficient production systems. Kantaros et al [ 121 ] review current trends and limitations in 3D printing and the implementation of DTs for additive manufacturing. DTs can also help to improve the fabrication process of 3D-printed objects.…”

“…From a cyber-world context, DT enables a mechanism for the digital transfer of real-world items and processes together with their relevant surrounding environment. Thus, DT can help optimize items or processes by analyzing and understanding them without the need to allocate resources for trial and error methods [14].…”

“…This is followed by designing the digital twin instances (DTI) of each physical object and its properties. Finally, the systematic properties of all digital twins need to be integrated (digital twin aggregate -DTA) to ensure further predictions can be made by understanding the acquired data and information [14]. Likewise, for smart manufacturing, the digital twin also has the possibility to assist when performing the monitoring as well as troubleshooting tasks of machine tools in an autonomous manner.…”
