3D multi‐fractal analysis of porous media using 3D digital images: considerations for heterogeneity evaluation

Abstract: Pore structure heterogeneity is a critical parameter controlling mechanical, electrical and flow transport behaviour of rock. Multi‐fractal analysis method was used for a heterogeneity comparison of three‐dimensional rock samples with different lithology. Six real digital samples, containing three sandstones and three carbonates, were used. Based on the mercury injection capillary pressure test on these samples, we found that the carbonate samples are more heterogeneous than sandstones, but primary results of … Show more

“…The fractal dimension is another quantitative parameter describing the surface roughness of a geometry, which is obtained using Avizo software. The larger the fractal dimension, the rougher the surface of the geometry is (Karimpouli & Tahmasebi, ; Wu et al, ; Wu, Tahmasebi, Lin, Jawad Munawar, & Cnudde, ; Xia et al, ). The variations of the generated dynamic models are demonstrated in Figure .…”

“…In the measurement theory, when the measures studied are the same in unlike scales, or at least the same in statistics, it can be said that the measures studied are self-similar, which is called multifractal (MF). MF can be expressed by generalized dimension spectrum(q-Dq) or α-f(α) multifractal spectrum [ 17 ].…”

“…Fractal and multifractal behavior has been observed in sedimentary rocks and soil from scanning electron microscopy (SEM) [6,28,29], X-ray computed tomography (CT) [12,30], nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) [18,31,32], and mercury intrusion analysis of core plugs [23,[33][34][35][36]. Fractal geometry and the multifractal method have been widely used to describe the porosity and permeability of porous media and clastic rocks [37][38][39][40].…”
