3D modelling of beach topography changes caused by the tombolo phenomenon using terrestrial laser scanning (TLS) and unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) photogrammetry on the example of the city of Sopot

Abstract: In 2011, a yacht marina was built in Sopot (the largest holiday resort in Poland), which initiated the formation of a local shallowing of the bottom related to the tombolo effect. The building of the marina led to disturbances in the transmission of bottom deposits along the coast, which resulted from waves and the shift of the beach coastline by approx. 50 m towards the sea. Its effects include progressive morphological changes in the shore and the sea bottom, which will lead to the formation of a peninsula b… Show more

“…Even if the research did not require permanent marking of control points (temporary markings could be used), it was decided to materialize them for later use, in the design and execution of the works to extend the agritourist farm. For the easy recognition on photograms of the points marked on the ground, reference panels with a size of 50 × 50 cm, painted in two colors (white/red) [44][45][46][47] were made and used (by positioning centered on the ground markings). At the same time, for the areas that allowed, the marking was made directly on the ground, by applying a layer of paint (white, red).…”

“…A new possibility to gather long-term 3D datasets is now provided by the structurefrom-motion (SfM) methodology, which in coastal monitoring is mainly used to build 3D models from UAV-derived images [1,[14][15][16], especially to detect post-storm variations of the beach configuration [17][18][19]. In coastal monitoring, SfM techniques have also been applied using low cost cameras for terrestrial surveys of cliffs [20], using poles with the addition of multi-view stereo (MVS) techniques [21] or even kite-derived images [22,23].…”
