Abstract: The evolutionary path of increasing the deflection angle in order to reduce the depth of wide-screen CRTs runs into severe difficulties beyond deflection angles of 120 o . We show that transposing the scan direction alleviates most of the difficulties, and enables super-slim CRTs with deflection angles up to 135 o .

The trend towards slim CRTs requires deflection yokes (DYs) with an improved deflection sensitivity. We present a new method to improve the deflection sensitivity by 15-25% by filling the space between the ferrite core and deflection coils with a soft magnetic material. The effect was analyzed in terms of a simplified two-dimensional model. These model calculations were confirmed by three-dimensional simulations and by experiments on a DY design for the Philips 29-in. Real Flat CRT.

We study the front-of-screen performance and optimal coil design for various deflection angles. Both normal scanning and transposed scanning are considered. In these investigations the energy dissipation in the coil is controlled. We find that the convergence errors grow with increasing deflection angle. Transposing the scanning direction reduces the convergence errors significantly. Thus coils with deflection angles up to 130° with good geometry and convergence can be designed.
