Effects of Age, Sex, and Obesity on N-Terminal Pro B-Type Natriuretic Peptide Concentrations in the General Population

Abstract: evels of B-type natriuretic peptide (BNP) and N-terminal pro BNP (NT-proBNP) help differentiate between cardiac and non-cardiac causes of dyspnea and are useful in predicting prognosis and monitoring treatment efficacy in patients with heart failure (HF). Both BNP and NT-proBNP are affected by demographic characteristics, such as age, sex, obesity, and renal function, 1-4 and their complex inter-relationships leaves uncertainties in the interpretation of the results of these biomarkers. It is well-known that ci… Show more

“…Our data concur with the results reported in the adult literature clearly demonstrating (after adjustment for age and sex) a negative association between BMI SDS and NT-proBNP levels [ 7 9 ]. We also observed significant negative associations between SDS of lipid levels (cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, and triglycerides) and NT-proBNP levels, which was more pronounced in boys.…”

“…Previous studies investigating NT-proBNP and hsTnT in children have limitations, conducted in small study populations, not encompassing all pediatric age groups, or confounded by being collected during presentation for inter-concurrent illness or surgery [ 3 6 ]. In adults, population-based studies showed consistently negative associations between NT-proBNP and metabolic markers, such as BMI and lipid levels [ 7 9 ], whereas the limited data available from pediatric cohorts have not demonstrated this correlation [ 10 , 11 ]. These divergent findings could be due to different metabolic mechanisms in childhood or secondary to a sampling error from small study participant numbers.…”

“…In the placebo group, the factor "Oxidative Stress", increased significantly (T = -2.21; p = 0.03), whereas in the active treatment group, there was no significant difference between inclusion and 48 months (T = 0.39; p = 0.70). NT-proBNP is a critical marker of the heart function, and its reference range in healthy individuals increases with increasing age after about 50 years of age [72,73]. In the present population (age 79-88), selenium supplementation was associated with reduced NT-proBNP-levels.…”

“…This new index is expected to be widely used clinically because it encompasses the advantages of both ANP and BNP as clinical indices. Furthermore, N-terminal pro BNP is regulated by various factors, 49 and the relationship between these factors and NPI should be clarified in the future. Finally, this factor is expected to be dynamic during treatment, and further research is needed to better assess at what stage of treatment it should be measured.…”
