Infective Endocarditis Due to Corynebacterium Species: Clinical Features and Antibiotic Resistance

Abstract: Background Corynebacterium species are often dismissed as contaminants in blood cultures but they can also cause infective endocarditis (IE) which is a severe condition. Antibiotic resistance of corynebacteria is increasing making treatment challenging. Reports on IE caused by Corynebacterium species are scarce and more knowledge is needed. Methods Cases of IE caused by Corynebacterium species were identified through the Swed… Show more

“… 12 The incidence is rare, but the mortality rate is substantial. A previous study 13 has reported 4246 IE cases caused by various pathogens over a 10-year period, only 30 of which were caused by Corynebacterium . The incidence rate during that period was as low as 0.032 IE/10 5 annually.…”

“…Notably, 70% of cases involved prosthetic valve endocarditis. All Corynebacterium isolates were susceptible to vancomycin, while resistance to penicillin G was commonly observed [ 10 ]. Therefore, our patient presented a unique case of Corynebacterium NVE, which is notable due to the typically high mortality rate associated with this condition.…”

“…In previous studies Corynebacterium spp. have been associated with CIED-associated endocarditis [7,8,[11][12][13][14][15]. In a study examining 30 IE episodes due to Corynebacterium spp., the median age of the patients was 71 years and 77% of them were male.…”

“…In the literature, Corynebacterium spp. defined into subtypes by using the VITEK 2 Compact (Biomerioux, France) automated system and the 16S rDNA sequence analysis methods [7,8,[11][12][13][14][15]. Our patient was a 55-year old man and the subspecies analysis could not be performed because such examinations could not be performed in our center.…”
