Cellulose Nanocrystals for Skin Barrier Protection by Preparing a Versatile Foundation Liquid

Abstract: Most of the foundation liquids in the market need makeup removers for cleaning, while the excessive use of makeup removers might lead to skin barrier damage, which would further lead to many kinds of dermatosis, such as skin sensitivity, facial telangiectasia, rosacea, acne, as well as various cosmetic contact dermatitis. Inspired by the protective effect of fiber-rich diet on the intestinal mucosal mechanical barrier, a novel hemp/cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs)-based foundation liquid featuring easy-wiping pro… Show more

“…Due to their high flexibility, the CNFs sheets favorably serve as face masks providing a good fitting and comfortable feeling on the skin and lips (Perugini et al, 2018). Moreover, peeling films can be formed as a separate freestanding layer with a good affinity to the skin (Tang et al, 2021). The formation of a coherent film with CNFs is enhanced by avoiding cracking and the film remains transparent due to the thin fibril diameters.…”

“…Aqueous CNCs suspensions are compatible with skincare products and are added at a typical dilution factor of 50. Inspired by the protective effect of a fiber-rich diet on the intestinal mucosal mechanical barrier, a novel hemp/CNCs-based foundation liquid has been recently formulated (Figure 6), which effectively solves the post-makeup skin cleaning problems (Tang et al, 2021). The basic features provide easy removal of the foundation through simple wiping, which avoids skin damage caused by excessive cleansing.…”

“…Inspired by plant pigmentation as natural filters to protect themselves against overexposure to UV, binding of AN to CNC was designed and prepared. Our previous study has applied CNC in foundation liquid [19]. Herein, we formulated traditional rouge from nontransparent minerals and plants such as clove and cinnabar (Figure 1(a)).…”

“…CNC extracted using acid hydrolysis of hemp stem was added into anthocyanin liquid at 0.15 g/mL and then stirred at 60 °C for 30 min. Then, the cellulose was centrifuged at 2000 rpm for 15 min [19]. The precipitation was grafting CNC-AN homogenate and eventually freeze-dried.…”

“…Recently, bacterial cellulose has gained interest as an ecofriendly alternative to synthetic polymers in the cosmetic industry. [210,249] It is mainly used as a 3D support matrix for skinmasks and delivery of bioactive substances. Regarding the effects of the silk sericin-releasing bacterial nanocellulose gel on the skin, the gel was less adhesive than the commercially available paper mask; however, it showed good adhesion to the skin and improved skin moisture (hydration effect) comparable to those of the vegetable extract mask formulation.…”
