Background Korean Red Ginseng (KRG) is a traditional herb that has several beneficial properties including anti-aging, anti-inflammatory, and autophagy regulatory effects. However, the mechanisms of these effects are not well understood. In this report, the underlying mechanisms of anti-inflammatory and autophagy-promoting effects were investigated in aged mice treated with KRG-water extract (WE) over a long period. Methods The mechanisms of anti-inflammatory and autophagy-promoting activities of KRG-WE were evaluated in kidney, lung, liver, stomach, and colon of aged mice using semi-quantitative reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR), quantitative RT-PCR (qRT-PCR), and western blot analysis. Results KRG-WE significantly suppressed the mRNA expression levels of inflammation-related genes such as interleukin (IL)-1β, IL-8, tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α, monocyte chemoattractant protein-1 ( MCP-1), and IL-6 in kidney, lung, liver, stomach, and colon of the aged mice. Furthermore, KRG-WE downregulated the expression of transcription factors and their protein levels associated with inflammation in lung and kidney of aged mice. KRG-WE also increased the expression of autophagy-related genes and their protein levels in colon, liver, and stomach. Conclusion The results suggest that KRG can suppress inflammatory responses and recover autophagy activity in aged mice.

Sauropus androgynus (L.) Merr.: a multipurpose plant with multiple uses in traditional ethnic culinary and ethnomedicinal preparations

Various plants form the basis of multiple traditional ethnic cuisines and ethnomedicinal practices across the globe. The ethnic cuisines cater to the nutritional, dietary and medicinal requirements of the tribal and rural communities even today. Using literature from various scholarly databases, this study was conducted to consolidate a comprehensive review on the use of Sauropus androgynus (L.) Merr. in various traditional ethnic cuisines and ethnomedicinal preparations across the globe. The survey shows that it is used in multiple ethnic cuisines and is variously known in different countries and among the communities. Further, it possesses multiple nutritional and ethnomedicinal properties. Considering its importance in ethnic foods and ethnomedicinal preparations, it is important to investigate the nutritional composition, phytochemical constitution and pharmacological basis of ethnomedicinal uses. Therefore, we further compiled this information and found that it is a rich source of both micro- and macronutrients and packed with several bioactive compounds. Survey of pharmacological studies on its traditional medicinal uses supports its ethnomedicinal properties. Despite its importance in traditional food and ethnomedicinal systems, it remains underexplored. Limited information on the toxicity of its various extracts shows that further studies should be conducted to understand its safety aspects. Further clinical studies to prospect possible drug candidates from it should be attempted.

Rau ngót hay Bồ ngót có tên khoa học Sauropus androgynous là một loại rau xanh của người Việt. Lá rau ngót tươi chứa hàm lượng protein, lipid, tro và chất xơ tương ứng (24,05±0,87); (4,20±0,02); (8,74±0,24) và (7,21±1,19) % theo khối lượng chất khô (CK). Nghiên cứu nhằm mục đích xác định ảnh hưởng của điều kiện bảo quản (lá rau ngót được bảo quản trong túi polythene đục lỗ ở nhiệt độ 6,20±2,89 oC và độ ẩm 49,00±13,23 %), phương pháp sơ chế (vò và không vò lá) trước khi chế biến nhiệt truyền thống đến hàm lượng vitamin nhóm B trong lá rau. Kết quả đánh giá hàm lượng vitamin B có trong mẫu rau khảo sát trong suốt thời gian bảo quản bằng phương pháp Sắc ký lỏng hiệu năng cao (HPLC) cho thấy hầu như các vitamin nhóm B tan trong nước (ngoại trừ vitamin B3) của lá rau ngót có xu hướng mất khoảng 50% khối lượng sau 8 ngày bảo quản trong tủ lạnh. Sau hai ngày bảo quản, vitamin B3 tăng đáng kể (123,39±19,45 mg/100g CK so với 203,75±3,94 mg/100g CK), sau đó giảm nhẹ theo thời gian lưu trữ. Hàm lượng vitamin nhóm B trong mẫu lá rau ngót được gia nhiệt trực tiếp trong nước ở nhiệt độ 90-100°C trong 15 phút với hai phương pháp sơ chế khác nhau: “vò” và “không vò” đã được khảo sát. Kết quả cho thấy, hàm lượng của tất cả các vitamin nhóm B được phân tích đều giảm, nhưng không có sự khác biệt đáng kể giữa các mẫu được xử lý theo hai phương pháp sơ chế khác nhau so với rau không qua xử lý nhiệt.
