Health risk of heavy metals in street dust

Abstract: Heavy metals in street dust represent a risk to the human health due to their toxicity, persistence and bioaccumulation. Using the US Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) assessment, here, we review the human health risks of such dust worldwide. The street dust in such cities is contaminated by As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Hg, Mn Ni, Pb and Zn beyond the median levels of the world soil background values. Among these elements, the median values of the hazard risk indices (non-carcinogenic risk) are highest for As, Cr and… Show more

“…Therefore, Hg is an international priority in terms of toxic pollution and is now a major global concern [ 12 , 15 ]. Pb and Cd are also a threat to human health because of their carcinogenic nature [ 16 , 17 ]. According to the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), they fall into Group 2B (Possibly carcinogenic to humans) and Group 1 (Carcinogenic to humans), respectively.…”

“…DPs are important routes for loading HMs into the human body [ 19 ]. The health risks posed by HMs in indoor and outdoor DPs have attracted particular attention [ 20 , 21 , 22 ]. https://journals.sagepub.com/action/doSearch?target=default&ContribAuthorStored=Naimabadi%2C+Abolfazl Previously, Naimabadi et al.…”

“…Intoxication with heavy metals is a global health problem (5) as is the extensive environmental Al pollution (2) and the metal exposures associated with outdoor and indoor particulate matter (PM) in urban environments (6,7). Exposure to metals is ubiquitous and emission sources are heterogeneous: gasoline, diesel, alternative mixed biofuels, contaminated soil, water and food, medical implants, waste recycling facilities, subway, lubricating oils, and occupational environments (8)(9)(10)(11)(12).…”
