Adsorption and removal of chromium (VI) contained in aqueous solutions using a chitosan-based hydrogel

Abstract: The aim of this work was to study the adsorption and removal of chromium (VI) ions contained in aqueous solutions using a chitosan-based hydrogel synthesized via chemical crosslinking of radical chitosan, polyacrylic acid, and N,N'-methylenebisacrylamide. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy confirmed the hydrogel synthesis and presence of reactive functional groups for the adsorption of chromium (VI) ions. The chromium (VI) adsorption mechanism was evaluated using non-linear Langmuir, Freundlich, Redlich-P… Show more

“…And the non‐linear Redlich‐Peterson isotherm can be used to describe the adsorption process of NH 2 ‐ZIF‐8 towards Ag(I) with lower chi‐square test statistic (χ 2 ), indicating the adsorption process was governed by multi‐site interaction and monolayer. Besides, the βs value of non‐linear Redlich‐Peterson isotherm model is much bigger than 1, suggesting the adsorption process is not exclusively governed by the Langmuir isotherm …”

“…Water pollution has become a global issue because of its increasing impact on human and animal health. The presence of heavy metals in industrial water is not only causing severe damage to human and animal health, but it is also damaging aquatic life [1][2][3]. The effluents from a variety of industrial processes such as metallurgy, petroleum refining, batteries, and electroplating are responsible for introducing these heavy metals into aquatic environments [4,5].…”

“…The Freundlich isotherm model presumes that adsorption happens at multilayers and various adsorbent sites have different energies. Equations (7) and (8) show the Freundlich isotherm model and its linear form:…”

“…ln q e = ln K F + 1 n ln C e (8) where the n and K F (mg/g) are Freundlich constants related to the adsorption intensity and adsorption capacity, respectively. Figure 14a,b presents Langmuir and Freundlich linear fittings, respectively, whereas the isotherm constants are presented in Table 2.…”
