SPEEK Membrane of Ultrahigh Stability Enhanced by Functionalized Carbon Nanotubes for Vanadium Redox Flow Battery

Abstract: Proton exchange membrane is the key factor of vanadium redox flow battery (VRB) as their stability largely determine the lifetime of the VRB. In this study, a SPEEK/MWCNTs-OH composite membrane with ultrahigh stability is constructed by blending sulfonated poly(ether ether ketone) (SPEEK) with multi-walled carbon nanotubes toward VRB application. The carbon nanotubes disperse homogeneously in the SPEEK matrix with the assistance of hydroxyl group. The blended membrane exhibits 94.2 and 73.0% capacity retention… Show more

“…[78] Various inorganic fillers such as nanoparticles (SiO 2 , [ [81] SiC, [40e] AlOOH, [82] and TPA [38b] ), nanotubes (ZrO 2 NT, [33b] CNT, [67,69,70] and Ce 2 Zr 2 O 7 NT [33c] ), nanosheets (GO, [71,72,83] SBA-15, [78] and g-C 3 N 4 [65,66] ) and microporous silicate (Engelhard titanosilicate-10 [68] and AMH-3 [63] ) have been used to modify the hydrocarbon-based membranes. Inorganic fillers are normally distributed in hydrophilic regions and can interact with sulfonic acid groups.…”

“…That is due to the hydrogen bonding network between SO 3 H groups of SPAEK and O-containing groups of ZrO 2 nanotube by creating hydrated water transfer channels and accelerating proton transport via the Grotthuss mechanism. [67] In addition, the functional groups increase the number of ion channels and form interconnective ion channels. The SPAEK/ZrO 2 NT (1.5%) composite membrane showed low self-discharge rate and ultrahigh self-discharge time of 595 h at 0.8 V, which was much higher than that of previously reported membranes for VRFBs.…”

“…Proton exchange membrane is a key component in the flow battery, which performs as a separator to isolate the positive and negative electrolyte compartments, and meanwhile to conduct protons (Jia et al, 2012 ; Yu et al, 2016 ). An ideal membrane is expected to exhibit high proton conductivity, good chemical and mechanical stability, accurate ion selectivity, and low-cost fabrication approach (Jia et al, 2010 ; Ding et al, 2018 ; Yuan et al, 2018 ). To date, the commercial Nafion membranes have been widely used in VRBs, because of its good proton conductivity, remarkable chemical and mechanical stability (Li et al, 2014a ; Dai et al, 2017 ).…”
