Newly Categorized Seromucinous Tumor of the Ovary: Magnetic Resonance Imaging Findings

Abstract: The imaging features of seromucinous tumors varied by tumor type. More than half of tumors were accompanied by endometriosis. High T2-weighted SI of the solid portion could be a specific feature of borderline tumors. It is hard to differentiate seromucinous carcinomas from other endometriosis-related carcinomas.

“…Endometriosis was present in six of 22 (27%) cases in our study, in common with the significant incidence of endometriosis in borderline and malignant seromucinous neoplasms. This figure is lower, but comparable to that identified in the studies of Han et al 18 . and Shamarkova et al ., 19 where endometriosis was found in eight of 15 (53%) and in four of seven (57%) benign ovarian seromucinous neoplasms, respectively (discussed below): details of the site of endometriosis were not provided in either study.…”

“…There is minimal literature regarding benign ovarian seromucinous neoplasms; this is mainly in the form of case reports or brief mention in studies of ovarian neoplasms in general, and in many of these detailed pathological descriptions are not available 18,19,21–31 . Regarding studies of benign seromucinous neoplasms since the 2014 WHO publication, there have been two publications by Shamarkova et al 19 .…”

“…Since soft tissue components, mural nodules and papillary projections can be seen in EAOC and SMBT, and also sometimes benign ovarian endometrioma (OE), it poses a challenging diagnostic dilemma to clinicians. [5,6] Hemorrhage due to endometriosis was present in a majority of EAOC and SMBT. [6] Magnetic resonance (MR) relaxometry is a noninvasive, promising new diagnostic tool for providing sufficient information for determining the iron concentration within the human tissue.…”
